Pixtral Large Beats Closed-Source Models
French company Mistral has released a new beast of an LLM model, Pixtral Large. The 124B parameter model is open source, and beats out even closed models (like GPT-4o) on a wide variety of benchmarks, and comes scarily close on most others.
For tech leaders, this is an indication that we won't be beholden to closed-source, tightly controlled models in our future projects and products, and should explore what open source has to offer.
GPT-4 Outperforms Doctors
A recent study has demonstrated GPT-4 outperforming physicians at diagnosing complex cases. In the study, the AI scored 90% accuracy in its diagnoses, while the doctors scored only 76% when assisted by ChatGPT, and 74% with no AI at all.
At a minimum, this shows that AIs can be great tools for doctors to use, but may also signal a sea change in how an overworked and underfunded medical system might evolve in the near future.
Ad-Supported LLMs
Perplexity had recently started including ads in their AI search results. They claim this is to help support the cost of revenue sharing, despite charging customers $20 per month, and we can't help but see this as a sign of things to come (much like streaming services now including ad-supported plans).
